Client: Tirol Lodge, Ellmau (AT)
Architect: Bruno Moser
Rooms: 171
Opening: December 2018
A hotel made entirely of wood – that was what the client wanted for the Tirol Lodge hotel project. And rather than a boxy hotel block, the result is an entire chalet village with 171 rooms in Ellmau, Austria. A special retreat amidst the mountain landscape of the Wilder Kaiser with direct access to the ski slopes, year-round heated outdoor pool and a sauna overlooking the Alpine panorama. However, the material was something of a challenge for the architect Bruno Moser: wood is constantly moving. This aspect can become something of a problem, especially in the bathrooms. Silicone joints could tear or leak, and moisture could damage the wood. The architectural office therefore opted for the floor-level shower areas Floor Side in combination with the Upstand. What makes this solution so safe? The frame made of glazed titanium steel extends the edge of the shower surfaces to under the wall cladding, and eliminates the need for silicone. The result: the wood remains effectively protected from moisture. Simply a really smart solution!
